The academic year was brought to a close with a Prize Giving ceremony on Friday 7 July. Basking in beautiful sunshine, pupils, staff, governors, parents and friends of Cokethorpe gathered in the marquee to celebrate the efforts and achievements of the pupils and to bid farewell to the Upper Sixth students. Louis Sharpe-Ward (Upper Sixth, Gascoigne) opened proceedings with a humorous and fond look back at his time at Cokethorpe, and handed over the role of Head of School to Mike Billing (Lower Sixth, Vanbrugh).
Cokethorpe was honoured to welcome guest speaker Claire Harvey who handed out an array of prizes. Following a life changing accident, Claire Harvey overcame a wealth of challenges that led her to complete at the London 2012 Paralympics as part of the Great Britain Sitting Volley Ball team. In a deeply personal and inspiring talk, she put into focus the attitude and determination required to face the challenges that life can throw at you.
Sir John Allison delivered his final Head of Governors speech as he stands down from the position this year, before the Headmaster brought the ceremony to a close with a witty insight into just how many sports he is prepared to watch on television! As families retired to the grounds to enjoy a picnic lunch, the School Choir and Orchestra warmed up for their performance. In preparation for the Music Tour to Germany, departing that evening, they performed a selection of pieces that would next be heard in the Rhineland!
