'This week saw the two meetings of the Junior School Book Club, but this time, with a twist.
On Monday 22 May, the author of Beetle Boy, M G Leonard, joined us via a live video link to answer questions from twenty-five eager readers. She thrilled us with tales of her childhood, discussed the inspiration for her novels and even showed us what pet beetles eat – strawberry bug-jelly apparently! We were even able to meet her pet beetle, Motty, who seemed dressed for the occasion in her dazzling iridescent elytra.
On Tuesday, the younger readers were able to direct questions to Jonny Duddle, the author of The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon, via a live Twitter conversation. The children were gobsmacked to discover that Jonny actually used to live and work on a real-life pirate ship! He sent through images from his time on the ship, as well as sketches and proofs of his latest, unpublished novel; we were very lucky indeed.
These were fantastic experiences for all who attended and really helped to inspire the children to begin their own journeys as writers.
The final titles of this academic year will be: The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, and Rabbit & Bear: Rabbit’s Bad Habits by Julian Gough. Kiran will hopefully be joining us in School to meet the children, which promises to be a wonderful end to a very successful year of the Book Club.
As a reminder, Waterstones in Witney offer £2 off The Girl of Ink and Stars and £1 off Rabbit & Bear if you quote ‘Cokethorpe Junior School Book Club’ in store.'
