On Thursday 27 April, the Choral Society performed their annual concert at the High Street Methodist Church in Witney. The Society were joined on stage by the Senior School Choir and the whole of the First Form and were accompanied by Dr Winkley on the organ with Mr Hughes conducting.
The concert began with three short pieces that demonstrated stylistically distinctive approaches to sacred composition. The programme opened with Mozart’s elegant treatment of the Ave Verum Corpus, before leading onto Purcell’s stirring hymn-like anthem, Thou Knowest, Lord, written for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695. This was then followed by Handel’s joyful choral Lord I Trust Thee, a lively work of the high-Baroque style that provided an effective prelude to Vivaldi’s celebratory setting of the Gloria.
The evening then showcased Vivaldi’s Gloria which demonstrated the considerable musical talent of individuals from across the school community. The movements were punctuated with outstanding solo performances from Scarlett Howard (Fifth Form, Gascoigne), Cerys Purser, Sara Knox, Izzy Ponsford (Fifth Form, Gascoigne) and Heather Walsh, with Poppy Wehrle (Third Form, Queen Anne) providing solo accompaniment on flute and Isabelle Carnell (Third Form, Vanbrugh) on ‘Cello.
The Choral Society is comprised of staff, parents and friends and features both trained professionals and those reading music for the very first time. All members of the Cokethorpe community are invited to join when rehearsals start again in January.
