Shooting for Gold

‘This term our Clay Shooting Squad has contended in four prestigious competitions. We started with The Warwick Challenge, where Captain Stuart Barbour (Lower Sixth, Harcourt) placed a respectable third. This was followed by the OGC Schools Challenge, where Captain Laura Fiedorowicz (Upper Sixth, Vanbrugh) won Bronze after a four-way shoot off. Nathan Black (Lower Sixth, Harcourt) scored a personal best with 48/50, but sadly did not place, even with this high score - a sign of just how tough the competition was. The day however belonged to our Ladies Team who won Gold, beating experienced squads such as Bredon, Millfield and the senior Royal Agricultural University. This exceptional achievement is even more impressive when you consider that we have never fielded a female team before and some of them have only taken up shooting very recently. As a prize the Ladies squad won a very nice new 20 gauge shotgun for the School gun room.

We then entered the Rendcomb Challenge with another superb win, this time it was our Gentlemans’ First Team who took Gold, beating Millfield, as well as Harrow School. Jacob Godfrey (Fourth Form, Gascoigne) won Silver, beaten only by Laura who not only won Top Gun in the female class, but overall, beating every boy in the field! This was followed by our First Team entering the OGC University Challenge, up against the best universities across the south. It was a tough competition, with 100 birds each, and we came a very respectable fifth. Once again it was our Ladies captain Laura Fiedorowicz who triumphed with her 85/100, gaining a Silver medal in the female category and another gun.

For such a young team to have done so well against strong opposition is a testament to their hard work and practice. We wish them well in next term’s two competitions, the British Shooting Olympic Experience and the British Schools and Young Shots Championships.’
