The Villain of Climbing

On 23 March, as part of the History Department's takeover of the Library, Mr Carter gave a talk to pupils and staff about Jim Perrin's book 'The Villain'. Perrin's biography of climbing superstar Don Whillans is a fascinating and, at times, disturbing account of a hugely talented and self-destructive athlete who pioneered climbing in the UK, the Alps and Nepal from the 1950s to the 1970s. Mr Carter gave an interactive talk on the book and the life of Whillans, which included a practical demonstration of some of Whillan's contributions to modern climbing equipment and techniques. A copy of 'The Villain' is now available in the library.
