Bonne Année! Junior School welcomed in the New Year with a French celebration of La Fête des Rois or Epiphany.
The whole School gathered in the Dining Hall to eat Galette des Rois and listen to seasonal French music. Each child had a piece of Galette, a round cake which has a small object hidden inside, called une fève. Une fève was originally a broad bean but we used what is now found in Galettes all over France and other Francophone counties, a ceramic charm representing a figure from the Nativity.
The lucky Junior School children who discovered charms in their piece of Galette were crowned King or Queen and won a crown to wear all day. We followed the French tradition that the youngest person around the table calls out who is going to have which piece of the cake, so there is no cheating!
