Junior School Book Club

This term saw the launch of the Junior School Book Club, with children from across the School being invited to join in by reading one of two books. The younger children were offered the classic, The Giraffe and The Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl while the older children got stuck into Cogheart by Peter Bunzl, a brand new adventure story in the ‘steampunk’ genre.

Before the first meeting, the excitement was built up as characters from the stories were hidden around the School for the children to find. Eagled-eyed readers were on the look-out for Pelly and a mechanical fox called Malkin, which were hidden in bushes, the Dining Hall and even in Mr Ettinger’s office!

The meetings were a great success, with over 40 children giving their wonderful opinions and insights, while sharing their reading experiences over squash and biscuits. We were even tweeted by the Cogheart author himself.

It was clear that the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were enthralled by the stories – while not being afraid to give their criticism of some parts! It was particularly impressive to see the level of understanding of the stories, as well as the maturity with which the children were able to discuss the books.

Book Club will continue with two new titles being chosen every half term.
