Climbers Get to Grips with Avon Gorge

The Cokethorpe Climbers visited Avon Gorge on the outskirts of Bristol on Wednesday 19 October, to experience climbing outdoors on rock.

Felix Checksfield (Fifh Form, Harcourt), Harley Collsell (Fifth Form, Queen Anne), Jacob Followell (Fifth Form, Feilden), Jess Foster (Fifth Form, Queen Anne), George Kinniburgh (Fourth Form, Harcourt), George London (Third Form, Feilden), Ben Newport (Fifth Form, Queen Anne) and Katie Reid (Fifth Form, Harcourt) all participate in climbing as an AOB option this term. Indeed, most have been climbing at Cokethorpe for a number of years.

The climbers got to grips with the challenges of rock climbing, not least the height of the crags and the distinct lack of friction. Ben Newport said: 'It was a great place and the climbing was suitably hard!' Mr Carter, the School's climbing instructor, was assisted by two other instructors from Far Peak climbing wall near Northleach. He said, 'the conditions were perfect, cool and dry, and the atmosphere is perfect at Avon and so it was a fantastic day out for our climbers. They all climbed extremely well showing skill and courage in an unfamiliar environment.'
