On Thursday 9 June, Miss Woodcock and Mr Cook took a team of 25 athletes to the invitational St Hugh’s athletic meet on a sunny afternoon. Athletics in the School is becoming increasingly popular and this is reflected by the number of First and Second Form pupils who were keen to compete in this event.
As usual, Cokethorpe dominated the track events, winning both 800m races with ease; Harvey Bell (Second Form, Vanbrugh) and Mae Topley (Second Form, Harcourt) should be congratulated on their strong performances in each of these races. But it was not only in the long distance races that Cokethorpe dominated; Edward Alexander (Second Form, Feilden), Harry Phipps (Second Form, Swift) and Ruari Kirkham (First Form, Feilden) proved that Cokethorpe athletes have speed, winning the 100m and 200m races convincingly.
While the action took place on the track unfolded, the field events began, with Harvey Bell (Second Form, Vanbrugh) jumped 1.30m to win the high jump competition and Chloe Elliott (First Form, Vanbrugh) threw over 30m to take victory in the Javelin. As the relays approached, the team felt confident and after strong starts in both the boys' and girls' races, the girls finished in 2nd place while the boys continued their dominance, winning the relay to finish the day off on a high.
All the athletes who took part at this meet should be extremely pleased with their individual performances and aim to progress throughout the athletic term in preparation for their return in Summer Term 2017.
