Tennis Team Reach National Finals

On Wednesday 8 June, the Senior Girls' Tennis Team traveled to St Helen and St Katherine to compete in the regional finals of the Aberdare Cup. Tennis coach, Mr Aitken has written a report about this exciting evening of tense tennis:

‘The Aberdare Cup Team of Taya Gujral (Lower Sixth, Queen Anne), Alex Boardman (Lower Sixth, Vanbrugh), Evie Phillips (Fifth Form, Swift) and Saffy Gujral (Fourth Form, Queen Anne) headed over for the regional finals against St Helen and St Katherine. At stake was the prize of playing at the national finals and being one of the sixteen best schools in the country.

The girls started with singles; long tussles with some great rallies which saw Evie win her match first in two sets. Next off was Taysie, who delivered another win, giving us a commanding lead. Alex defended and scrapped brilliantly, but unfortunately came up just short, losing the third set match tie break. This left Saffy with an almighty tussle against an old foe she knew very well, yet again going to a third set but this time she prevailed!

So going into the doubles we were 6 - 2 up, meaning one win would take us into the national finals. Both doubles seemed to get off to edgy starts, with each side looking for the killer shot. Taysie and Alex teamed up against a well-established doubles pair, with Evie and Saffy on the second court. We managed to lose the first set of each doubles leaving ourselves some work to do, but Cokethorpe resilience saw both pairs win the second sets to force tense match tie breaks. Evie and Saffy had some good chances and some moments of brilliance, but unfortunately they came unstuck and missed out on the crucial win. However, after some ups and downs, Taysie and Alex clutched victory in their match and this win took the whole team into the national finals!

Many thanks to all the parents who came to watch; congratulations to the girls, who are off to Queenswood School on Wednesday 6 July to compete against fifteen other teams in the nationals!'
