On a rather wet Thursday afternoon, Cokethorpe Junior School hosted their annual 9 a side rugby tournament. Eight teams were split into two groups, playing a round robin to determine who would progress to the final.
Despite the conditions there was some excellent rugby played in the group stages, with all teams displaying determination and commitment.
Cokethorpe A, having won their opening two matches, needed to defeat Magdalen College School, in order to progress to the final. In a close fought game they were narrowly defeated 30-20, which meant they faced Abingdon Preparatory in the third and fourth place play-off match.
The first half was closely contested, with Cokethorpe working hard in defence to stop a well-drilled Abingdon team. As the second half progressed, Cokethorpe became stronger, particularly at the breakdowns, and piled on the pressure, eventually securing a comfortable 20-5 win.
Special mention should go to the grounds staff, who worked hard to ensure the pitches were marked out and were in excellent condition, despite heavy rain during the week. Finally, thank you to our referees, who did a commendable and professional job all afternoon.
