Cokethorpe Boys Win River Race

James Bennett (Upper Sixth, Swift) recently travelled down to Cornwall with other Cokethorpe boys for an aquatic sporting challenge, and wrote up this report:

On Friday 23 October, six keen kayakers travelled down to St Austell in Cornwall for a weekend of sea kayaking, surfing and racing. The first day was awesome as we braved the devilish waves of the Cornish sea and went out coast-crawling in sea kayaks, entering the various caves before surfing the waves back to shore. Later, we travelled to the Fowey River to paddle racing kayaks past the moored boats in the choppy estuary.

Sunday saw us enter the Fowey River Canoe Race with harsh conditions making it all the more difficult, including incoming tides and strong winds. We all took part in the race, with a strong win from Matthew Dray (Fifth Form, Gascoigne) and Mathew Turner (Fifth Form, Feilden) and third place from Christopher Singleton (Fifth Form, Queen Anne). The final day was again exciting as we strolled down to Porthpean Beach to go surfing in the crashing waves. Overall the trip was epic and everyone involved had an excellent time taking part in all the activities available.
