An Inspirational Life Story for Sixth Form

Cokethorpe Sixth Form students benefit from regular lectures by guest speakers from many varied backgrounds; Heidi Lawson (Upper Sixth, Gascoigne) has written an account of this week's Enlightenment Lecture:

Lance Corporal Derek Derenalagi delivered the most inspirational life story to the Upper Sixth and Fifth Form in the second of this year's Enlightenment Lectures. Having had both of his legs blown off in Afghanistan, Derek has gone on to not only recover with the most admirable attitude, but also to win gold medals in international athletics competitions and compete at the London 2012 Paralympics.

His wife also shared her side of the story, which was delivered with great poise, dignity and emotional sincerity - it was very thought-provoking.

I thought it was invaluable for us to hear about real life outside of our Cokethorpe bubble, as lovely as that bubble is. There were so many messages to take from their story, about how they both dealt with the devastating situation that they were faced with - it certainly put all of my problems into perspective and I know my fellow students share my sentiments. Thank you again for such a wonderful talk and good luck for the Rio Olympics, Derek!
