On Monday October 5, Thoralf the Viking came to talk to the Year 3 children about the Viking way of life. They are studying this topic in their History lessons this term. The children quickly became captivated by Thoralf’s stories about the exciting adventures of these historic Nordic invaders. Year 3 were then shown recreations of Viking armour, weapons and musical instruments, real furs and an authentic quern with which to grind corn.
This experience really enhanced each child’s learning about the Viking culture, while also extending their understanding of other subjects. When demonstrating musical instruments, Thoralf went into detail about the ways in which sound was produced, which encouraged the children to think about the technology behind Viking history. During the last part of his visit with us, this Viking invader demonstrated the use of the sword and fired arrows across the Corinthian Room; the child-safe kind of course!
