Choral Society Sing the Songs of Africa

The African inspired Zimbe! was the beautiful, catchy and soulful music chosen for this year’s Choral Society concert. The title Zimbe! is the anglicised version of the Swahili word for ‘sing them’ and that is exactly what they did.

The Choral Society was joined on stage by the Senior School Choir, the First Form Choir and the Junior School Choir and was accompanied by a lively jazz quintet band.

Miss Mitchell did a brilliant job of conducting all of the choirs, and the band and kept everyone together through some complex and pacey numbers that had the added challenge of being a foreign language.

The sell-out audience were treated to a selection of songs that captured the essence of the African spirit including a simple children’s playground song from Ghana, a Xhosa lullaby for mothers of the victims of apartheid, a raucous drinking song from Zimbabwe, sensuous wedding songs and some beautiful funeral and worship music.

The Choral Society is open to parents, staff and friends of Cokethorpe and all are welcome to join, from experienced vocalists to complete beginners.

Rehearsals will commence in January in preparation for next year’s concert and further information will be provided towards the end of this year.
