Author 'Sparkes' Passion for Reading

The first event of Junior School Arts Week was a visit from the popular children’s author Ali Sparkes.

Ali, who began her writing career as a journalist and comedy script writer, proved to be a highly entertaining speaker. Cokethorpe pupils and visitors from Chandlings and Woodstock Primary School enjoyed hearing how Ali’s writing career had begun when, as a child, she had fallen in love with reading The Famous Five by Enid Blyton.

Encouraging the children to persevere even after setbacks, Ali explained how she collected ideas and developed characters. She has now had over thirty books published, winning the Blue Peter Book Award with Frozen In Time.

Highlights of the morning were Ali Sparkes’ Whirly-Whirly taking the children back in time and her amusing description of computer games! After a book signing session, Year 6 Cokethorpe pupils were then lucky enough to take part in a writing workshop with Ali. They thoroughly enjoyed working in groups to produce their own story titles, blurbs and first pages. An inspirational day!
