On 6 March 2015 the Cokethorpe School Jazz Band participated in the Chipping Norton Music Festival’s Youth Jazz Band Challenge and stormed their way to first place, walking away with the well-deserved winners trophy.
The band performed Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage first with outstanding solos from Ed Woolley (Lower Sixth, Queen Anne) on alto sax, Harry Lovibond (Upper Sixth, Queen Anne) on keyboard and Aidan King (Upper Sixth, Gascoigne) playing guitar with Harry Creak (Fifth Form, Feilden) and Richard Thompson providing the melody throughout all the solos and Wilf Cartwright (Fourth Form, Queen Anne) and Charlie Tobin (Upper Sixth, Feilden) flawlessly holding the rhythm.
The second song played by the band was The Jazz Crusaders Street Life which had Marion Bird (Fifth Form, Feilden) leading the way on vocals, this upbeat song had the audience’s feet tapping away and Ed Woolley, Harry Lovibond and Aidan King playing some outrageously good solos again.
The adjudicator commented on the fact that Cokethorpe School Jazz Band was a well integrated and precise ensemble that played well together. They did themselves and the School proud.
