Twenty-two students, accompanied by Mrs Dawes and Mr White spent a week playing tennis in Valencia which was hosted by the Club de Tenis, Moraira.
We stayed in two fantastic villas two minutes from the club and dedicated ourselves to four hours a day of high level coaching, with additional hitting practice and still had time to sample the delights of Spanish cuisine and the town’s Halloween fiesta.
We catered for ourselves with a couple of barbeques and a pasta night and consumed an extra-ordinary amount of bread, ham, cheese, fruit and cereal along the way. Importantly the pupils took pride in their own ability to cook, washing up and keeping the villas tidy, with a little prompting from the staff!
We were split into four ability groups for the training and mixed in with local players and others who had come to benefit from the coaching and weather at the tennis centre.
The head coach, Stephen James-Bourke , was amazing and with a history of hitting with Chris Evert in her prime on the European tour and an impressive resume of helping top juniors and professional players including David Ferrer and Jamie Ward, we were in good hands and the pupils absorbed his every word.
The coaching was inventive and fun, and certainly put us all through our paces both physically and technically.
