Sport

Children find that sport plays a significant part in their lives at Cokethorpe, both within the taught timetable and as part of the extra-curricular programme (known as AOB). Rugby, hockey, cricket, netball and soccer all feature at various stages of the academic year. Pupils have two structured training programmes each week from experienced and qualified coaches, with additional training if they are to represent the School in competitive fixtures.
As the termly fixture lists illustrate, we are passionate about sport. High-profile sporting successes are frequent and varied, from county to international level. The Physical Education Department has established a county-wide reputation for high standards of attainment, competing against much larger schools and winning several competitive events; we are the current Oxfordshire County U18 and U15 Rugby Champions while our senior hockey team competed with distinction at the regional finals.

The department is staffed by 36 experienced coaches, of which 14 are part time. Games days allow pupils to select from over 12 different options ranging from the traditional school sports to a wide range of subsidiary sports designed to suit all tastes and abilities such as golf, aerobics, clay pigeon shooting, dance and sailing. The parkland provides ideal playing fields and a 9-hole golf course. All-weather pitches, a sports hall, fitness suite, climbing tower and clay-pigeon shoot all contribute to the School’s reputation for sporting excellence.
Children are encouraged to reach their full potential through hard work, enjoyment and commitment. They will learn to be competitive, to be champions with modesty or take defeat with honour and build the invaluable virtues of team-spirit, self-confidence and fair play as well as the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Central to the work of the department is the place that competitive games plays in the development of all pupils. The percentage of pupils who may in any one year represent the School is on average over 65%. The School regularly provides these opportunities through 12 rugby sides, 9 hockey teams, 11 football teams, 8 netball teams, 7 cricket teams, 6 rounders and 4 tennis teams, as well as through the many other sports offered.
The fixture programme enables pupils to represent the School during the week and there are also some Saturday morning fixtures.
Physcial Education is also taught as part of the teaching curriculum and is an option at both GCSE and A Level. Click here for information.

Cokethorpe School Sports Academy
This selective activity exists to enhance the knowledge and performance of the School's most talented sporting performers. Invited pupils are not only given individual strength and conditioning programmes, but also participates in workshops on a number of important topics such as: warm up, cool down, sports nutrition, time management, injury prevention and recovery. These are delivered by staff and visiting speakers. All Sports Academy members usually visit a major sporting fixture and a centre of excellence to view athletes training.
Senior members of the Sports Academy also get the chance to gain awards from National Governing bodies. Some members of the Sports Academy are awarded sports scholarships. Scholars of the Academy are permitted to wear Academy specific clothing.
