Junior School Music

Music in the Curriculum

Music is a fundamental part of life in the Junior School. All years have one Music lesson per week with the Junior School Music teacher where they cover a wide range of topics including learning to read and play music, composing as well as covering the basic theory of music.

There is a 'Composer of the Week' in which all years are involved, including hearing the composer's music in the weekly Assembly and learning about their personal histories.

Individual Lessons

Individual lessons are offered to children and they are fortunate to be taught by the Senior School instrumental teachers. These take place in the Senior School and so usually start from Year 3. They have the choice of lessons in woodwind, strings (including the classical guitar), percussion, piano, brass and singing.

In addition to this children may be selected to perform in Junior School recitals. The more talented performers may be invited to join the Senior School orchestra and ensembles.

Music Ensembles and Activities

There is a full timetable of extra-curricular music activities and these take place both at lunchtime and after school. They include the Junior School Orchestra, Clarinet group, Year 3 Violin group, Junior School Chamber Choir, Samba Band and Lower Junior Singing (Years 1-3).

The music ensembles get the opportunity to perform throughout the year, whether this is at a dedicated recital or part of other events such as Junior School Arts Week.
