Cokethorpe School

Scholarships

At Cokethorpe we recognise a wide range of abilities and achievements through award of scholarships. These carry considerable prestige and privileges. All scholarships carry a fixed fee remission of 5% of fees. Scholars may also apply for a bursary.

What is a Scholarship
A scholarship is awarded in recognition of a pupil’s merit and potential for a particular ability or achievement. This carries considerable prestige and privileges and is assessed by a pupil’s performance in a particular written or practical examination and interview. A scholarship carries a fixed fee remission of 5% of fees and is awarded irrespective of financial means. Scholars may also apply for a bursary.

Scholarship Assessment
Selected Lower First candidates are considered for a variety of scholarships and are invited to the Scholarship Assessment Day after they have completed the Lower First Assessment and Activities Day. Scholarships awarded at age 11 are held for two years in the first instance, and award holders then complete the Third Form Scholarship Assessment process in Upper First.

The main Third Form Scholarship Assessments are held, both for those already in Upper First and those joining from other schools, during the year before entry. These awards are held for three years in the first instance. Sixth Form Scholarship Assessments can be arranged on an individual basis or external candidates can join the internal (Fifth Form) candidates for the Scholarship Assessment Week before entry.

Scholarship awards will continue subject to good progress and behaviour and to the holder continuing to make a contribution to the area of school life for which the award has been made, with formal annual re-assessments made at the end of each academic year.

Academic
Scholarship awards are made to recognise both an outstanding performance in written papers and scholarly potential at interview. Academic scholarships are available at age 11, age 13 and Sixth Form.

All Round
All Round awards are made to those with significant academic ability who have demonstrated a range of other skills and abilities and who will make an outstanding contribution to the wider life of the School.

Music
Candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in at least two instruments (or one instrument plus voice), and also to show ability in sight-reading, aural and general musicianship. Award winners will normally (but not necessarily) take Music at GCSE, and at A Level for Sixth Form award holders, and make a significant contribution to the musical life of the School.

Art
Awards are made on the basis of a portfolio of work, a practical examination and interview with the Head of Art, as appropriate for the candidate’s age. Award winners at age 13 will be expected to take Art or Art and Design at GCSE, and awards will continue to be offered in the Sixth Form for those taking A Level Art or Art and Design.

Drama
Drama awards are made to acknowledge achievement and potential in the performing arts. Award winners at age 13 will be expected to study Drama at GCSE.

Sport
Award winners will normally have reached high standards in at least two different sports, including selection for (or the potential to be selected for) a county team. Award winners are expected to show talent, motivation, good sportsmanship and an enthusiastic approach to School life.

Modern Languages
These awards are made for a particular ability in languages and outstanding performance in a Modern Language paper in the Academic scholarship exams. These awards are available at age 13.
