Children should arrive at School between 8.20am and 8.40am. A short registration is held at 8.40am and it is important that children are in class prior to this.
Occasionally, it may be necessary to drop children slightly earlier, in which case they should wait in the sofa area. The staff need time alone in their classroom to prepare for the day and so we ask that children do not come to the classroom earlier than this.
Children are encouraged to take themselves to their classroom although those in the Pre-Prep (Reception Class, Year 1 and Year 2) may be delivered by parents. We usually find that by the end of Year 2, children feel able to come into class unaccompanied.
The Junior School Assembly is held each Friday in the Chapel and is led by Mrs Cook, members of staff or their classes, visiting speakers or the School Chaplain. Each assembly includes a hymn and a prayer and a moral story or focus for the day. On regular occasions, there is also a Lower Junior Sharing Assembly in the Corinthian Room for children from Reception Class to Year 4.
Assembly time may also be an opportunity to celebrate various events or special occasions.
There are various breaks during the day for play. Morning break is from 10.10am-10.40am and children are provided with a healthy snack. We ask that children bring their own water bottle to School and these are stored in the classroom. Children staying until 5.00pm are encouraged to bring a small, healthy snack to sustain them until the end of the day.
When the weather is good and the ground dry, children play in the parkland. When the grass becomes unsuitable, play moves to the adventure play area and tennis courts or to the astroturf pitches. Trainers must be worn for outdoor play. Children must play in the designated area and staff are always on duty to supervise. If the children have any problems they should seek one of these teachers immediately.
If it is raining, the children remain in their classrooms and are supervised for quiet activities.
Pre-Prep children go in to lunch at 11.50am and the rest of the Junior School at 12.00pm. Children in Reception Class, Year 1 and Year 2 are served their meal at their table as ‘family service’ and the other children are able to select their lunch from the servery.
There is always a wide choice of food available: a hot main meal with a vegetarian option, vegetables, a salad bar, puddings, cheese and biscuits and fresh fruit. The caterer is able to accommodate specific medical diets and is very happy to discuss these with parents.
The tables are laid with cutlery, glasses and napkins and the seating plan for lunch is organised so that the children can sit with their friends each day.
Grace is said with each meal and notices are given by staff on duty.
Children in Reception Class should be collected from their classroom at the end of the day. All other children should be collected from the Front Hall. It is important that they are safely handed over to their parent or carer and for this reason they are not permitted to leave the Mansion House unattended. Senior School children may collect their younger sibling and accompany them to their parents’ cars.
A member of staff is on duty to supervise. The car park is always busy and we ask that parents are vigilant and do support these safety measures.
Parents should let the class teacher know if any child is going home with another parent or carer.
Children taking part in after-school activities will meet parents in the Front Hall at the end of their activity. A member of staff is on duty to see children on to the buses.
Parents are requested to let the Junior School Office know if they are unavoidably delayed, so that we can reassure children and make arrangements for their supervision.
After School Care is provided from 4.10pm to 5.00pm for children in the Pre-Prep who have older siblings in the School and are therefore staying until 5.00pm. They have their afternoon snack and are supervised for a variety of activities including clubs, games, videos, colouring and reading. We do not charge for this provision.
