Pre Prep

Our Pre-Prep department is an exciting and creative place to be! The imaginative topic-based curriculum and inspiring teaching means that the children have the very best start in their formative years.

Specialist teaching starts from Reception Class for Drama, French, Music and Physical Education and for Art from Year 2.

The pupils in Reception Class follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and work towards the Early Learning Goals. There are seven areas of learning:

  • Personal Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Understanding the World

Our goal is to ensure a smooth and happy transition for the children as they move up from the EYFS curriculum to the more mature environment the Pre-Prep.

Although some subjects are taught discretely, we aim to provide a well-balanced and challenging curriculum that encourages independence, academic achievement, social development and good manners. Our themed topics each half term allow for creative teaching and learning, whilst following the main areas of the National Curriculum, including the new frameworks for Mathematics and Literacy.

Our pastoral care is woven into all we do and we have a well-structured ‘Golden Rules’ system that consistently encourages positive attitudes towards others, as well as teaching the children to be the best they can be individually and as part of their wider community. Respect, courtesy, kindness and consideration are qualities we believe to be essential in developing well rounded, confident children who are ready to move on with their more formal education through the Junior School.

The children in the Pre-Prep Department gain a great deal from being included in the Junior School House system. They participate in vertically organised House activities, involving all the children from Reception Class to Year 6. They also enjoy whole school fundraising events and celebrations where they take part alongside the older children.

Carousel

Children aged from 3 ½ who are registered to for our Reception Class in September will join Cokethorpe children for a variety of fun activities. These include creative play, music-making sessions, arts and crafts, dressing up, action songs, sand play, small world and imaginative play. The children have refreshments and use the Junior School outdoor areas. The Saltbox Music Company also visits each term to lead interactive imaginative educational music activities.

The Carousel sessions help prepare the children for moving on through the education system, whilst also letting them experience our excellent care and facilities.
