Sport plays an integral part in life at Cokethorpe School. Excellence at the top end is underpinned by an ethos of participation.
In addition to Physical Education, which is taught as part of the curriculum, there are numerous opportunities to take part in a wide range of sporting activities. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to play meaningful and competitive sport, at Inter-House, School, representative, or purely recreational level.
Through sport we aim to develop pupils' confidence and resilience by exposing them to physical, technical and mental stimulus, giving them the opportunity to develop strong teamwork and leadership skills. We provide quality coaching from sports specialists, and offer a variety of lunchtime clubs for pupils to enjoy. We also have a first class sports injury clinic to help our young athletes return to fitness safely.
In addition to the major sports for boys and girls of rugby, hockey, soccer, netball, cricket, tennis, athletics and kayaking the opportunity exists for non-competitive options of aerobics, fitness, sailing, squash, badminton and climbing.
Cokethorpe’s sporting facilities contribute to the School’s reputation for sporting excellence. Set in 150 acres of beautiful parkland, the sports facilities include:
- Six pitches dedicated to football and rugby
- Two astroturf pitches
- Six netball courts
- Fourteen tennis courts
- Three cricket squares
- A boathouse on the River Thames
- Indoor Sports Hall
- Fitness suite
- Fully equipped weight training area
- Outdoor climbing wall
- Clay Pigeon shooting area
These are also supplemented by regular use of local squash courts, sailing at Farmoor Reservoir and golf at the nearby Witney Lakes Golf Course.
